Who We Are

The Humane Society of St. Thomas.

Since 1957, we’ve been sheltering the abandoned animals of St. Thomas — providing safe haven, critical care, and new beginnings for thousands of abandoned and at-risk animals each year.

What drives us

Our mission since 1957.

We are dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of abused, abandoned and neglected homeless animals, placing them in loving, permanent homes while creating an environment of respect, responsibility, and compassion.

Our mission—rooted in compassion, respect, and responsibility—began with a handful of visionary citizens who refused to ignore the suffering of stray and neglected animals across St. Thomas.

Our Journey

From a parking lot in 1957 to today.

From humble beginnings to a modern campus and veterinary clinic.

Humble Beginnings

1957 · The beginning

Humble Beginnings

Started sheltering animals in hand-built stalls at the Fort Christian parking lot. A handful of volunteers, a handful of animals, and an idea that would outlive them all.

First Facility

1969 · A permanent home

First Facility

Moved to our first permanent facility in Estate Nadir. The first time the door we opened in 1957 had a real address.

Modern Campus

2011 · A major expansion

Modern Campus

Opened a 4.7-acre campus with five major buildings, serving over 2,000 animals every year across St. Thomas.

Veterinary Clinic

2024 · Newest milestone

Veterinary Clinic

Opened our in-house surgical clinic — high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgeries available to families across St. Thomas.

Our campus

A sanctuary for healing.

Our 4.7-acre campus features five major buildings and is home to 129 animals right now. We are continually striving to improve our facility and in 2024 we opened a much-needed veterinary clinic. This helps to ensure that preventive care, spaying, and neutering are available to every pet in need.

Our legacy of compassion

A legacy of compassion, powered by members, donors, and volunteers like you.

Our funding comes almost entirely from donations and the good will of people who believe every life deserves love and respect. Standing as the only animal shelter for St. Thomas residents, we’ve provided over five decades of unwavering community service and advocacy.
